We submitted an entry to the inaugural outdoor Sculpture Festival at Mullumbimby’s Palm Park in the Byron Shire (corner of Brunswick Terrace and Burringbar St).
The outcome is a piece called Un Ring, a sizeable ring-shaped steel sculpture made from laser-cut mild steel, which forms the structural parts of the work. Sheet steel is neatly welded in place around the outside and insides of the ring’s arcs to form a solid shape.
The steel sculpture ring has been assembled in three interlocked sections, while the joins are also shaped like puzzle pieces. In synergy with the surrounding natural environment, we allowed a certain naturally occurring superficial rusting to cover the entire surface of the structure before using a clear coating to provide protection from further rusting, oxidation and handling.
The inspiration for this steel sculpture work comes from circles, which appear in the earliest symbols and signs of many ancient cultures and are commonly interpreted to represent connection, unity or a view into another reality. Due to the outstanding quality of the work, the Byron Shire Council acquired the steel sculpture ring for the public to enjoy permanently.
